Postage stamps and postal history of the Chad
CHAD (TCHAD) (REPUBLIC OF CHAD)
A state in Central Africa. Area 1284 thousand square kilometres, population 8.7 million. The capital is N'Djamena. Membership in the UPU since 01.07.1876 (indirect), since 23 061961 (direct). Until 1898 the territory of Chad was a part of French Algeria. In 1900 Chad was declared a military territory, in 1903 it became a part of the French Congo colony. After the partition of the colony in 1905, it became part of Ubangi Chad. In 1920 it became a separate colony. Since 1910 it was a part of the federation French Equatorial Africa. Since November 1958 autonomous republic within the French Union. Independence was proclaimed on 11 August 1960.
Until 1915 the stamps of the French Congo were in circulation, replaced by the stamps of the colony of Ubangi-Chari-Chad. In 1922, its own stamps were issued - the stamps of the Middle Congo with the overprint "Tchad". In 1924 they were overprinted "Afrique Equatoriate Francaise". The series was supplemented, reissued and overprinted until 1933. Additional stamps were issued with overprints as well as with original designs. The only series of commemorative stamps was issued in 1931. From 1936 until the issue of the autonomous republic's own stamps, the stamps of French Equatorial Africa were in circulation.
The first issue after the declaration of independence was dedicated to the anniversary of the republic, another issue was in 1960. From 1961, the issue of standard, airmail, commemorative, postal charity, service and military stamps began. The first block was issued in 1964.
Monetary system: 1 CFA franc (CFA) = 100 centimes.
Philatelic information
The first Chad stamp was issued in 1922. In circulation were stamps of the Middle Congo stamps with overprints:
- "Tchad" - Chad;
- "Afrique Equatoriale Francaise" - French Equatorial Africa.
Overprints on the original stamps:
- "RF. AEF. Tchad" - French Republic. French Equatorial Africa. Chad";
- "Postes"- post office;
- "Cbiifre-taxe" - surcharge (on surcharge stamps);
since 1959:
- "Republique du Tchad" - Republic of Chad;
- "Timbre-taxe" - surcharge stamp.
